Emergency Contraception
If you have had unprotected sex and are worried about unplanned pregnancy, act fast! You have 2 choices of emergency contraception:
The ‘morning after’ pill
You can get emergency contraception (sometimes called the morning after pill) from any of our clinics, some local pharmacies, or from your nearest A&E (in Medway this is the Medway Maritime Hospital).
You need to take the contraception within 72 hours of having unprotected sex for it to be effective (if you are prescribed ‘Ella One’ this can be taken up to 120 hours or 5 days later).
Find out where to get the morning after pill from a pharmacist or clinic near you by entering your post code below.
The coil
The coil can be used as emergency contraception but needs to be inserted within 5 days after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. To have a coil fitted, book an appointment with your doctor (you’ll need to check that they offer this service) or come to Clover Street.

Emergency HIV treatment
If you think you may have been exposed to HIV it’s important to act quickly.
HIV transmission can be stopped in its tracks through a course of treatment (called PEP) soon after unprotected sex. The treatment must be started within 72 hours (three days) following exposure to HIV. You will need to be seen by a doctor in a clinic or at any Accident and Emergency department if the clinics are closed.
This treatment requires tablets to be taken once or twice a day for 28 days to be successful.
You can access advice by calling 0300 790 0245 or sending a text message to 07401 302946.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 11.30am to 5pm,
Thursday and Friday, 8am to 3pm.
